At Hiawathia Floral Design Co., I’ve always believed flowers should be more than décor — they should be an experience. That philosophy blooms brightest in my avant-garde floral wearables: one-of-a-kind pieces that bring couture energy into the world of floristry. These aren’t your typical corsages or boutonnieres. They’re bold, artistic statements — designed to be worn, celebrated, and remembered.

What Are Avant-Garde Floral Wearables?
Think of them as where fashion meets floristry. These creations take the elegance of couture design and marry it with fresh, living blooms. From dramatic floral hats to sculptural shoulder pieces, jewelry-like accents, and even botanical gowns, avant-garde wearables transform the wearer into a moving installation of art.
Each piece is designed not only to complement an outfit, but to be the outfit.

Spotlight: Orchid, Amaranth & Lisianthus Hair Clip
One of my favorite recent creations is a sculptural hair clip crafted with phalaenopsis orchids, trailing amaranth, and soft lisianthus.
- The orchids bring sleek, high-fashion elegance.
- The amaranth adds texture and movement, echoing the dramatic drape of couture fabric.
- The lisianthus softens the composition with a touch of romance and delicacy.
This piece was designed to blur the line between floral accessory and wearable art. Whether worn at a wedding reception, gala, or styled shoot, every turn of the head reveals another layer of texture and color, making it a true showstopper.

Why They’re Perfect for Events
Floral wearables are more than accessories — they are conversation starters, photo magnets, and unforgettable memories. Imagine:
- Corporate galas where brand colors bloom into floral cuffs or necklaces for guests.
- Weddings where attendants wear botanical jewelry instead of traditional bouquets.
- Fashion shows & editorials where flowers become sculptural couture, blurring the line between runway and garden.
- Immersive brand launches where each guest leaves with a floral wearable — turning the event into a living, interactive installation.
Behind the Design
Creating wearables is equal parts engineering and artistry. Each piece requires:
- Durability: Hidden mechanics that keep flowers fresh and intact for hours. In order to achieve lonhg lasting durability on this hairclip and other wearables that have no water source, I use a method called a hydration chamber taught by the floral wearable icon known as PassionFlower Sue. The hydration chamber is a very simple idea. I use a container, line it with wet paper towels. After spritzing my design with water and Crowning Glory, I seal it in container and refrigerate it until it’s show day. However, depending on the time-line, I may not refrigerate it at all but I do ensure that it is hydrated. This process allowed me to wear this clip in the Georgia heat all day with no signs of wiltage.
- Comfort: Lightweight designs that can be worn effortlessly. Design + Function.
- Artistry: A fearless mix of color, scale, and texture that transforms an accessory into a conversation piece.

Why Clients Love Them
Avant-garde floral wearables let clients push beyond the expected. They give guests a way to not just see flowers, but become part of them. That experience resonates long after the petals fade, leaving a lasting impression that standard décor simply can’t.
