Hiawathia Floral Design Co. specializes in foam free floral design whenever the project and setting allow. Instead of relying on traditional floral foam, I use alternative mechanics such as chicken wire, pin frogs, reusable floral cages, Agra Wool, water filled vessels, and other supportive design systems.
Many of these mechanics can be cleaned and used again for future arrangements. Foam free methods can also encourage greater creativity, natural movement, and more expressive floral compositions. The specific mechanics selected for each project depend on the flowers, environment, installation requirements, and overall design.
Local and Seasonal Flowers
Whenever possible, I source flowers from local farms, trusted wholesalers, and responsible growers. Supporting local flower farms strengthens relationships within the floral community while giving me access to beautiful seasonal blooms that may not be available through traditional supply chains.
Seasonal flowers can bring a sense of time and place to a wedding or event. Their natural variations, movement, and character also complement my approach to artful floral storytelling. Because flowers are living materials, availability may vary throughout the year. When a particular flower is unavailable, I select thoughtful substitutions that preserve the intended color story, texture, movement, and feeling of the original design.
Reducing Waste and Single Use Plastics
I carefully consider the vessels, packaging, and mechanics used throughout the floral design process. Whenever practical, I minimize single use plastics and select reusable, recyclable, or compostable alternatives.
This can include reusable containers, well designed vessels, recyclable cardboard flower boxes, water based mechanics, and materials that can serve more than one purpose. Flowers and greenery that cannot be repurposed may also be composted when appropriate.
